As the Professional Engineering license holder for MaGrann Associates,
Doug has overall responsibility for oversight and compliance of all engineering
and technical consulting activities for both residential energy conservation
programs and builder/architect clients. In addition, he provides
technical consulting for NJ Energy Star Homes under New Jersey’s Clean
Energy Program™, including implementation of builder and
contractor standards and training initiatives.
Since joining MaGrann Associates in 1993, Doug has developed programs
to analyze residential and commercial buildings for energy code compliance
in ten states and has participated in numerous standards development
processes. He oversees design of HVAC systems for residential single,
multifamily and mixed use buildings, including prototype designs for
production builders. He specializes in systems for energy efficient
new construction, as well as cost effective solutions to problems in
existing buildings. He has developed quality control field inspection
programs for energy code compliance, design and construction.
Doug conducts training courses for builders, engineers, HVAC contractors,
energy raters and other company employees, related to heating and cooling
system design, HVAC system installation, energy efficient construction,
energy and mechanical codes, and home energy ratings.
He has surveyed and analyzed hundreds of residential and commercial
buildings, including design heating and cooling load calculations and
energy usage simulations, and has provided engineering reports and expert
testimony for legal cases in New Jersey Superior Court relating to design
and installation of heating and cooling systems and energy related specifications
for residential construction.
Doug began his career in residential energy engineering as Project Engineer
for Energy Efficiency Consultants Inc. in 1987, where he conducted field
surveys, supervised technicians, calculated building heating loads and
performed steam system designs and economic analysis.
Doug has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University,
Pittsburgh. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in New York,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, a Certified
HERS Rater, an ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) certified
residential trainer, and a member of the American Society of Heating,
Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
